What is blended learning and how does it work?

Blended learning as an approach is not new. Indeed, the practice of combining (blending) different learning approaches and strategies is not new. Distance learning courses have long combined blended learning through a mix of self-access content (print/video/TV/ radio) and face-to-face/telephone support. 'Traditional' courses have always combined (and some still do) a variety of delivery modes that combine content such as lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and group work to give learners a range of learning opportunities. And of course, 'good teachers will always use more than one method or approach in their teaching, and good learners will always combine different strategies in their learning' (Marsh, 2012:3*).

So we could say that the term 'blended learning' refers to every time teachers mix different media (e.g. print, audio, and video) with classroom interaction, maximising authentic input in order to support learners' output and skills development. As such, blended learning has more or less always existed, although the term itself is a mere 15 years old at most, and is now understood to mean a rich, supportive learner-centred learning environment where the 'right blend' is synonymous with effective learning (and teaching).

 What is new is that today, technology combines all the different media within one environment: online. The online space facilitates learner–learner interaction, encourages incidental and exploratory learning and allows learners and teachers to stay connected outside the classroom, if they so wish. Learners can benefit from the fact that space and distance do not matter any more. Teachers and educationalists are now understanding more and more that, with the 'right blend', teachers can offer a much richer, supportive learning environment, learning opportunities increase, learning becomes more effective and the learning process becomes more enjoyable.

There are many definitions for blended learning, but they all have the following in common: they refer to two different learning environments — face-to-face (synchronous) and online (asynchronous); and they refer to combining those two learning environments in a complementary way to deliver a programme of study so that learners can be supported both within the classroom environment and outside of it. In other words, the term blended learning refers to any programme of study that is delivered by appropriately combining both synchronous interactive study (usually face-to-face) and asynchronous (individual) study (usually online).

We could go further and say, 'It's in the blend!' That is, the key to a successful blended learning approach is to use the strengths of each medium appropriately, combining the two different learning environments in an integrated way so that each medium complements one another: the classroom environment being used for what it does best, such as introducing new topics, explaining important language points or for meaningful communicative activities, and the online environment being used for what it does best, such as preparing for the next topic (by watching a video/reading a text, etc.), and/or practising and consolidating what has been learnt in class or for extra practice. Both modes of delivery put the learner at the centre of the learning process.

CORONAVIRUS


Coronavirus is a newly discovered virus. It causes a disease called Covid-19. In some parts of the world, it has made lots ............ people sick. A lot of symptoms are similar to the flu. You may have dry and itchy cough, fever, lots of sneezing and even hard to breathe. Most of people who has gotten sick with this coronavirus have had a mild case. It means you will not feel the disease. But, for people who are much older or who already have health problems are more likely to get sicker with coronavirus.


If anyone gets sick and feels like they may have coronavirus, they can immediately call their doctors and get help. If there is something we are not sure about the information, confused or worried about, don’t be afraid to ask someone we trust.


Here are some things you can do to protect yourself, family and friends from getting sick: 1) wash your hands often using soap and water. 2) Sneeze into your elbows. It is believed that coronavirus spread through little liquid from our lungs. If you sneeze into your elbows, you can prevent germs for going far into the air. 3) Avoid touching your face. Don’t pick your nose. Don’t touch your mouth. Don’t rub your eyes. They are the places where the virus enter our bodies. 


Remember that this kind of virus can affect anybody. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what country you are from. Don’t forget, there are a lot of helpers out there who are working to protect us from the virus. We can take a part by keeping our health and stay at home to stop the virus spread to others.

    That long period hints that more bat viruses with the potential to infect humans are circulating in horseshoe bats. Searching for such bat viruses can help identify potential threats before the pathogens make the jump, the team writes.

Fair trade – but what’s in it for the world?

 The fair trade movement, which aims ensure that fair prices are paid to producers in developing countries, is one of the true global success stories recent decades. The International Fairtrade Certification Mark, a guarantee that producers are getting a fair price, has become one of the most recognizable logos the world, which 91 percent of customers associate positive values. When the logo first appeared in the UK, the country where the largest number of fair-trade products are sold, nobody expected that the number of certified products would grow from only 3 to over 4,500 in just 18 years. In 2011, people around the world spent more than 6.5 billion US dollars on fair- -trade certified goods, signifying a 12 percent increase in sales from the previous year. This was at a time when most market segments in the developed world were still shrinking or stagnating from the after effects of the 2008 banking crisis. Over 1.2 million farmers and workers living in 66 countries benefit from fair- -trade certification by being able to sell their products at competitive prices, to ensure sustainability.

 Fair-trade initiatives have been growing steadily since the late 1960s, when the fair trade movement started with only a handful of committed individuals in the West who believed there was an alternative to the exploitation of farmers and workers in the developing world. Fair trade ensures fair prices for suppliers, as well as payment of a premium that can be reinvested in the local communities (for example, in schools or sanitation) or in improving productivity. In India, for instance, a group of rice farmers used the premium to buy farm machinery, which meant a 30 percent improvement in production.

 As consumers look for, and recognize, the logo and purchase fair-trade products, they put pressure on companies and governments to do more for global welfare. They also put pressure on supermarkets to sell fair-trade goods at the same price as conventional products, shifting the extra costs involved from consumers to the corporations that collect the profits.

 Critics of the fair trade movement say it is still not doing enough. They stress that the key to long-term development is not in small local improvements, but in moving the developing world from the production of raw materials into processing them, which can bring in greater profit. There are already some signs of this happening. A group of tea growers in Kenya recently set up a processing factory to deliver the final products directly to their customers in the West. By switching from the export of raw tea to boxed fair-trade products, they achieved 500 percent higher profits.

 It is important to realize that, despite all of its benefits, the fair trade movement has its limitations. Some of the poorest farmers can’t afford to pay the certification fees required for each fair-trade initiative, while others work for big, multinational employers that are excluded from participating. Fair trade is certainly a step in the right direction, but there is a lot more we must continue to do in order to help people in the world’s poorest regions.
