O longa metragem Germinal é uma adaptação do célebre romance de Émile Zola, publicado em 1885. O filme, assim como o livro, retrata as condições de vida dos trabalhadores franceses no século XIX, a partir de uma greve de mineiros. A narrativa procura demonstrar algo que as análises de Marx e Proudhon, dentre outros pensadores e ativistas socialistas de meados do século XIX, perceberam.
