Reading a text does not imply that it does not have many unitary meanings potentially accessible to all. It rather allows a variety of interpretation by different readers, governed by factors such as purpose, background knowledge, and the relationship between the reader and the text (Nuttall, 1996; Aebersold & Field, 1997). From this perspective, reading is understood to be a complex cognitive process in which reader and text interact to (re)create meaningful discourse (Araújo, 2005).
