2. This view of bilingualism is remarkably different from the understanding of bilingualism through much of the 20th century. Researchers, educators and policy makers long considered a second language to be an interference, cognitively speaking, that hindered a child’s academic and intellectual development.

They were not wrong about the interference: there is ample evidence that in a bilingual’s brain both language systems are active even when he is using only one language, thus creating situations in which one system obstructs the other. But this interference, researchers are finding out, isn’t so much a handicap as a blessing in disguise. 6. Bilingualism’s effects also extend into the twilight years. In a recent study of 44 elderly Spanish-English bilinguals, scientists led by the neuropsychologist Tamar Gollan of the University of California, San Diego, found that individuals with a higher degree of bilingualism — measured through a comparative evaluation of proficiency in each language — were more resistant than others to the onset of dementia and other symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease: the higher the degree of bilingualism, the later the age of onset.

Dizer que “o cachorro é o melhor amigo do homem” não é novidade, mas não deixa de ser uma verdade boa de se repetir. Vários estudos já comprovaram que os cães sentem amor de verdade pelos seus donos, que eles diminuem a ansiedade de crianças e que, em vários lugares, eles são tratados como gente. Para somar a essa lista de benefícios: em um estudo recente, um grupo de cientistas australianos mostrou que, quando o cachorro e o dono estão juntos, os batimentos cardíacos dos dois entram em sincronia.
O estudo foi assim: três cães foram separados de seus donos por algumas horas, enquanto os cientistas monitoravam os batimentos do coração dos bichos e das pessoas. Depois, os cachorros e seus respectivos humanos foram colocados novamente juntos (ainda com os monitores cardíacos). O resultado foi que em menos de um minuto depois do reencontro, os corações dos donos e de seus cachorros se acalmaram, as frequências cardíacas diminuíram e os batimentos começaram a se espelhar. O mais interessante é que os cientistas que conduziram o experimento também mediram os batimentos enquanto cada humano encontrava outro cão que não era o dele, e perceberam que, aí, os dois corações não entram em sincronia. Apesar de a frequência cardíaca diminuir nessa situação, os batimentos sincronizados dos corações do humano e do animal só parecem acontecer quando há uma ligação especial entre cachorro e dono.
Um estudo como esse não é só adorável: ele é importante para encontrar novas formas de lidar com o stress. Estudos anteriores já mostraram que quem tem um cachorro é menos estressado, menos ansioso e tem uma imunidade muito melhor. Para os cães, a relação também é proveitosa: quando sentem o cheiro do dono, o cérebro deles ativa uma área associada ao prazer, o que combate doenças como depressão e ansiedade dos cãezinhos.
