O que acordou o menino tarde da noite não foram os palavrões,
estava acostumado a dormir com barulho, mas o chute na caixa
de papelão, uma embalagem de geladeira largada na calçada
havia dois dias que lhe servia de cama. (...) Permaneceu imóvel,
silencioso, à escuta, coração batendo forte, até certificar-se,
pela natureza dos sons, de não estar sendo alvo de predadores.
Esticou o pescoço para fora da caixa e espiou. Cuidava de não
fazer ruído, estratégia de sobrevivente. O homem saíra bêbado
do restaurante e tentava ajudar uma mulher cheia de dourados
a entrar no carro estacionado a pouco mais de dois metros da
caixa. Na verdade, era ela quem o ajudava. O homem, já
entrado em anos e em álcool, além de tropeçar nas pernas da
mulher, ameaçava cair em cima da caixa. Com muito esforço,
aboletou-se no banco ao lado do motorista, deixando a perna
do lado de fora, presa entre o meio-fio e o carro, e não parecia
preocupado em recolhê-la. A mulher assumira o lugar do
motorista e estava para dar partida no carro não fosse o fato de
a chave estar no bolso dele, que, por sua vez, estava com a
porta aberta e a perna do lado de fora. O menino
desinteressara-se da cena e estava prestes a recolher a cabeça
quando viu a carteira de dinheiro no bolso de trás da calça do
homem, quase inteiramente para fora, num equilíbrio precário,
pronta para ser colhida. Manteve a posição de vigia e esperou.
