The first sentence contains only a noun-object relationship. The noun is "we" and the ensuing verb "understand" only calls for a simple object, as it doesn't need preposition. In the second sentence, in the first clause there is an object caluse :: we learn what we share as human beings (object) and also in :: what remains common in all of us under the broad range of differences that separate us. /*another object clause*/
